Understanding GST in India: Complete Calculator Guide

Everything you need to know about GST slabs, CGST vs SGST vs IGST, and how to calculate GST online.

What is Goods and Services Tax (GST)?

GST is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based tax that is levied on every value addition in India. It replaced a complex web of indirect taxes, bringing uniformity to the tax structure. Understanding GST is crucial for both consumers and business owners.

Components of GST: CGST, SGST, and IGST

The GST structure in India includes three main components based on the nature of the transaction:

  • CGST (Central GST): Collected by the Central Government on intra-state sales (within the same state).
  • SGST (State GST): Collected by the State Government on intra-state sales.
  • IGST (Integrated GST): Collected by the Central Government for inter-state sales (between different states).

GST Slabs in India

Goods and services are divided into five broad tax slabs for collection of tax: 0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Essential items are often tax-exempt or taxed at the lowest tier, while luxury goods attract the highest rate.

Calculating GST

Calculating GST involves either adding the tax to a base price (Exclusive) or extracting the tax from a total price (Inclusive). For example, to add 18% GST to ₹1000, the tax is ₹180, making the total ₹1180. To find the base price of an item sold for ₹1180 inclusive of 18% GST, you divide 1180 by 1.18. An online GST calculator simplifies these mathematical operations instantly.
